Blog Comments Part II – Comments Allowed

Okay. So last week I wrote blog comment confessions and several of you tweeted and emailed me about the post, particularly the inability to comment on a post that you really wanted to.

Honestly, I really didn’t have time to miss comments because you all found me in other ways and showed your support. Thank you!

Well, let me tell you I just had to close comments to prove that I would not self destruct if I didn’t get comments on a post.

AND there is the other reason…… so I could get stuff done!

You see when I get comments I get so excited! When I see the email alerts I have to check out the site of the person who commented. Then if I really like the site I start looking around, leaving comments, subscribing to the site, tweeting posts, etc.

Then while I am there I look at who else commented on the posts that I like and guess what?

Yep, now I gotta go see their site and repeat the above steps.

Other times when I check my email for comments I see the email posts from blogs that I subscribe to and then guess what?

Yep, same thing now I gotta go see their site and repeat the above steps.

Then when visiting the sites that use blogger comments I have to sign into blogger and THEN you know what happens……

My google reader list is right there and now I gotta look around to see what is new.

Now if I am not careful my entire day can be consumed in blogland.

So I must be careful.

And since I’ve got some stuff in the works that I must take care of I had to turn the comments off that day.

I still love you all.

So with all that said, now let’s talk. Do you let blog comments define your site? How do you balance blogging with real life?

Talk to me. I’m listening!

Blogging ain’t for wimps

I thought it was time again I talk about blogging. If you missed my previous posts Did I fart or Something and Things I’ve learned about blogging feel free to read them too.

For me blogging has been a great way of expressing myself, sharing my journey to remain optimistic, connecting and networking with people from around the globe.

In 2012 I will continue to grow in my blog journey. You can find out what to expect from me in a interview by Stesha Sims of Hot Chocolate Mocha Caramel here.

If you are new to blogging or experienced you know that you have to be mentally strong to run a public blog.

Why?

Competition – you entered a race you didn’t even know existed. You try to be a considerate blogger and visit other sites, leaving comments and sharing posts. BUT as you visit other sites you can’t help but notice the fancy designs, large readership and comments, awesome paid posts, and unbelievable giveaways! Then without even realizing it the voices start to tell you to blog more, take more photos, update your design, review more products, etc., etc., etc.

But you must remember blogging ain’t for wimps.

What does that mean?

You are not a wimp!
Be proud of your OWN work.
Love your blog the way it is!
Use other sites as future inspiration not a mandate for your own site.
Be true to yourself.

Remember I’m no expert I’m just sharing somethings that I have learned along the way. Oh and don’t get too caught up in numbers.

I know you aren’t a wimp either so be sure to tell me how you remain strong in your journey if you are a blogger or website administrator.

Things I have learned about blogging

First of all I am not an expert on blogging, social media, or networking but as editor and chief of Life is Hard Laugh Anyway, I have learned a few things in my personal blog journey. Below are just a few of those things I would like to share today.

Product reviews sound fun and exciting but not until you get the right product. Sure I have been contacted by several companies to do a product review. Some are more interesting than others, but I need to make sure it is the right fit and that I can commit to ensuring a good review. In order to really reap the benefits of product review, it will require some work and sometimes research to develop a good review that your readers will appreciate. Note: I am still waiting for Nikon, Canon, Apple and Mercedes to contact me. Then let the GOOD TIMES roll!

Google Ads will not make you rich. I have earned $7 since July 2011 and they won’t issue you a check until you earn at least $10. I am really hoping to see that money by Christmas. I am not saying you can’t earn a decent wage from the ads, but it’ll take more than just placing them on your sidebar to earn any type of respectable income.

Confession: Sometimes instead of just leaving comments on a fellow blog site, I click all the ads too. You can thank me later.

Blogger Circles. It’s true, just like in real life you develop a circle of friends. It is tough when you start out because everyone wants to be in the popular group, but you don’t always get in. Get over it. The “cool” bloggers may never stop by your site or even reply to your comments. It is OKAY! Trust me I sought after many blog connections before I finally developed, what I like to call, a blog network of friends. And people join and leave the network as they so desire. It is OKAY!

Comments. Leave quality comments on other blogs that you visit, “stopping by from blog hop” and “please follow back” are not comments that make someone who poured their heart and soul into a post hurry over to your site. I know several bloggers that delete those comments. Okay, I confess I left poor comments when I first started out but I didn’t know any better. And with that said I don’t want you to start off or continue down that path.

Twitter can be your friend or enemy. If you want me to follow, mention, or retweet you, please engage me into your tweet stream. Trust that I will want to check out those tweeps that are connecting with me on a personal level. Posting a thousand giveaways and retweeting your own post a thousand times a day doesn’t intrigue me. NOT ONE BIT. If you are giving away a million dollars, that is totally different. When doing this be sure to mention @AnOptimisticMom and I will be right over to Tweet, Like, and +1 the crap out of your giveaway.

Presentation. Make sure your blog is visually appealing. You could have the formula for the fountain of youth posted, but no one will ever know it if your site is a HOT MESS! Now some people probably think that this site is not nicely done or well organized. BUT I am pretty sure it isn’t you. HOW? Because you are here reading. Get my point?
Note: If you are just starting a blog consider keeping it private until you polish it off a bit. Looking back I wish I had done this. I know I scared off a few potential followers with the scary generic design I used.

Use your personal voice. When I visit your blog I am not looking for a dissertation. Be you! That is who I will connect with. It is hard to be someone you are not and readers will recognize your inconsistency. Please be careful not to confuse versatility with being someone you are not.

Just a few additional notes:

  • Remember it is your blog site, make it your own.
  • You don’t have to follow the beaten blog path with your posts.
  • Don’t be afraid to take a chance.
  • Being unique is what will make you stand out above the others.

I have learned a lot, but still have much more to learn. I know I would like to work towards the next level and connect with even more people on a personal and professional level. I would really like to attend or even speak at blog related events within the next year or so. However, one of my ultimate goals is to be able to help others realize that life doesn’t have to be hard every single day and that you can turn a bad situation around. Life is hard, laugh anyway is truly the message I want to send to the world.

If you are a blogger what have you learned in your journey? And, if anyone has tips on how I can meet my ultimate blog goals be sure to share them in the comments? I’m listening.

Did I Fart or Something?

From what I have learned in my short time blogging is that there comes a time when you ask yourself. Did I fart or something?

When I first started my blog here it was kind of…. Well ugly. Those of you who followed me from my previous blog you know it was kind of…. Well boring.

People rarely left comments or even viewed my page, I felt like google had denied me rights to blog search engines.

Around the same time I joined twitter. I confess I originally had a spammer type user name. I followed everyone and no one followed back. I tweeted and no one replied, mentioned, or retweeted me.

This is really when I began to wonder did I fart or something? This is a poop free zone. So I don’t know what is going on.

Is my content that bad? Am I ugly? Do I talk too much? Do I forget to spell check?

As I continued to write, write, and write, still not much feedback. It was as if people thought I was the bad smell in the room.

Well, I since then learned if you want people to acknowledge your writing, blog, rss feed, twitter, etc. you have to acknowledge them also. This means you gotta go read some blogs and leave some comment love.

I know my family and friends don’t read my blog and that is okay, gives me opportunity to write about the crazy stuff they do. But I do know somebody gives 2 cents about what I have to say in this blog.

The lesson learned is that to be successful you have to pay it forward. So that is what I do now.

So what about you? Have you ever wondered why no one was reading your blog? Trust me it isn’t because you farted, this is online. So let it go, whenever you want….do it now if you want. Go ahead.

Special thanks to Jennifer Probst who blogs at JenniferProbst.com and 4Badmommies and toAngela Jones who blogs at  Keeping up with the Joneses They have been reading my blog since the beginning. If you can, show them some twitter follow love and/or blog comment love.
